This whole project began as a personal crusade to convince my dad, a pastor, to get a tattoo. I adore my family, our heritage, the whole Sondrol saga, from my great grandpa Ole coming to the US… but let’s be honest: the tattoo part is the real prize. His deal was simple: “Use that fancy, probably too expensive design degree to make a family crest, and maybe I’ll let a stranger stab ink into my arm” (heavy paraphrasing by me). Challenge accepted. If I was going to do this, it needed to be a concept worthy of our Viking ancestors, combining ships, runes, and crafted chaos of Nordic Knots.

The Sondrols have been proudly Norwegian for approximately forever. We are talking generational bragging rights, the kind you would find etched into a stave church beam or whispered by a shepherd on a mountain ridge as he tends to his sheep. So I leaned into it. The brand system takes cues from old church architecture, the shapes of longships, and the quiet confidence of people who spent centuries living beside fjords and pretending the cold did not bother them.
This is still a work in progress, that is until my dad gets the tattoo.
Heraldry meets modern design, mythology meets minimalism, and somewhere along the way, even the sheep got representation, in the nordic knotted shield crest. If all goes well, this identity will not just live in a PDF. It will live permanently on my dad’s arm, leg or (fingers cross) neck. A future relic of Sondrol pride, endorsed by one pastor, designed by his tattoo manifesting child, and blessed by Odin.
