Blending reality and the magic of disassociation

For the DnD and fantasy role players out there. Kellrin’s Components began as a catalogue for the disassociating high fantasy medieval tabletop alchemist player. They told me to pick a niche, so I swan-dived straight into the strange. The catalogue brings to life every rare ingredient your party member’s heart might crave. Hill Giant toe moss, Hobgoblin urine, Vampire dust, it is all neatly documented and aggressively marketed. All you have to do is place your gold on the teleportation circle at the back of the catalogue and speak the provided incantation. Instant delivery, guaranteed* by the eldritch forces of commerce.

the products are REAL!
…kind of.

On the more serious designer side of things, every item in this project was created and photographed before it was edited. The animals were the only exception. That highly sought after Mycelia Dermus is not actually a humanoid conscious mushroom that was chopped into bits by goblins, sorry to ruin the illusion. It is just one of those little dinosaurs that grow when you put them in water, sliced up and packed into a real glass vial. The entire process became a strange blend of prop building, photography, and pretending I was running a very illegal fantasy apothecary.

A tangible item in an unreal world

Kellrin’s Components eventually merged into my DnD group as a permanent non player character, which gave our brewing system an unexpected sense of realism. Suddenly every potion had a supply chain. Every ingredient had a price tag. Every questionable purchase came with a Kellrin comment card. It became one of those world building details that sticks around far longer than you expect because everyone at the table enjoys the chaos.
